Winter Sewer Averaging

Your key to a lower water bill all year long

Lower your water consumption December through February to control your sewer costs year-round

Magnifying glass over water bill

Woodlands Water has some of the lowest rates in the region, but that still doesn’t mean we enjoy paying the bill. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to lower your water bill now AND throughout the coming year. It’s called “Winter Sewer Averaging” and it works like this…

The average amount of water you use during December, January, and February determines your maximum monthly sewer charge for the following 12 months. The less water you now, the lower your charge all year long.

For example, the average Woodlands home uses 6,000 gallons of water a month between December and February; this generates a maximum monthly sewer charge of $39.90 for the following year. If a neighbor “winter averages” 10,000 gallons a month (perhaps by continuing to irrigate their lawn), they’ll generate a maximum monthly sewer charge of $64.50 and could pay as much as $295 more over the course of the year. Yikes!

Monthly Residential Sewer Rates*
  • Base Charge: $3.00
  • Charge per 1,000 gallons of water used: $6.15 (avg across MUDs)

Tips for lowering your Winter Sewer Average

  2. Turn off the sprinklers November through March. Rain supplies all the water our lawns need this time of year. In fact, irrigating during cooler months, when grass is dormant, invites disease and pests come spring. More lawn care tips here.
